JK Rowling’s right to express her personal views has been defended by Warner Bros, as the studio prepares to film the new Harry Potter TV series.

The Times of London reports that the studio has released a statement clarifying its support for the author, who has faced widespread criticism in recent years for her views on trans and women’s rights.

The studio said: “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to the power of friendship, resolve and acceptance.

“JK Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

Rowling was first described as “transphobic” in 2020 when she moved a brand using the term “people who menstruate” instead of the word “woman” in an article. She has since gone on to defend her gender-critical stance, outlining why she feels it is important to defend women’s rights.

The young stars of her films, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have spoken up, criticising her stance. Many young fans of the books have boycotted the books in recent years, as a result of the author’s views.
