Jessica Simpson and her husband, Eric Johnson, have announced they have separated.

“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson said in a statement to TODAY.com. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”

The couple married in July 2014. They are the parents to daughters Maxwell, 12, and Birdie, 5, and son Ace, 11.

In November, Simpson, 44, teased new music with an Instagram post in which she played it coy.

“Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic. This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve,” she wrote, without alluding to anything specific.

Johnson has been relatively absent from Simpson’s Instagram feed over the last few months. In 2023, though, she wished him a happy birthday.

“Eric turned 44 on Sept 15 and his family gave him all the love cells we have to celebrate his life. My heart is so taken with this Man, I could hardly call it my own…. We love youuuu,” she captioned a series of pictures of them with their kids.

In a 2023 interview with People, the “With You” singer spoke lovingly about Johnson, 45.

“He knows my heart and understands my heart more than anyone I’ve ever met in my life,” she said. “I knew the instant we met that I could see my future in his eyes and with a lot of people, I hope for a future in their eyes, but with Eric, I saw it.”

Simpson also said she and Johnson clicked from the first moment they met.

“It was love at first sight. It was infatuation at first sight, and there was something so peaceful and gentle about him that I never experienced in a man,” she told “Access Hollywood” in 2023.

When asked about the key to their relationship, she said it was pretty simple.

“I feel like a lot of people say the key is communication, but it’s also communication as friends. I think you have to be best friends. I mean, you’re doing everything in life together,” she said.

“But it is good to keep the romance there, even with three kids on top of our head. It’s hard, but he’ll leave me little notes, because he’ll wake up earlier than me. He’ll leave me little letters.”

Prior to her relationship with Johnson, Simpson was married to Nick Lachey from 2002 until their 2006. Their marriage was chronicled in the MTV reality series “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.”
