Jenna reacts to Amy Poehler’s ‘SNL’ impression of her — while sitting next to her
Back in 2005, Amy Poehler did an impersonation of a young Jenna Bush Hager on “Saturday Night Live.” Twenty years later, Jenna is sharing her reaction to the skit — with Poehler right next to her.
While guest co-hosting on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on Feb. 10, Poehler was discussing the upcoming “SNL” 50th anniversary special when Jenna brought up the memorable moment during the comedian’s career on the live sketch comedy show.
“One thing that I remembered about your lustrous career is that you actually played me once,” Jenna told Poehler.
When Poehler asked for her stamp of approval, Jenna said she thought the impersonation was “excellent.”
In the “SNL” sketch from Season 30, Poehler played Jenna while Tina Fey impersonated Jenna’s sister, Barbara Bush, in a scene that took place after former President George W. Bush’s inaugural ball.
Jenna cracked up while watching a throwback clip of the comedian’s performance, while Poehler said, “I’m sweating, I’m sweating.”
Jenna noted at that point in her life, she was already a teacher.
“Y’all might be thinking, ‘Oh, she’s making fun of college Jenna.’ By then, I had actually graduated. I walked across the stage. And I was a teacher of third graders in Washington, D.C. But you still got a lot right,” Jenna said as Poehler burst out laughing.
Poehler explained that Fey wrote the sketch with the intention being they had a “twin language.”
“That is kind of the job of ‘SNL’ is that you do end up sometimes standing next to the person that you’re impersonating, but thank you for having a good sense of humor about it,” Poehler said. “It was really fun to do.”
