Patrick Schwarzenegger on watching NSFW ‘White Lotus’ scenes with his family: ‘No rules’

If you’ve been watching Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” you’ve probably seen a little bit more of certain cast members than you ever expected.

From Jason Isaacs’ full-frontal scene in Episode 4 to seeing Patrick Schwarzenegger completely nude in front of a mirror in Episode 1, there’s been plenty of bare skin to go around.

Schwarzenegger tells TODAY.com how watching the third season of the hit HBO show with his family has gone.

“We watched the first episode together and all my family members had different reactions to seeing me completely nude,” he says.

Schwarzenegger’s parents, actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and TODAY contributor Maria Shriver, had their own reactions, he says.

“My dad thought it was hilarious,” he says. “My mom didn’t even really understand what was happening. You know, everyone had a different kind of thought.”

His fiancée, model Abby Champion, “melted into her chair” while watching, he says.

“She was kind of flustered by it,” he recalls.

Meanwhile, brother-in-law Chris Pratt had “a really funny line” in which he joked, “he’s not blood related, so he was looking where he wanted,” Schwarzenegger recalled, referencing Pratt’s interview with “E! News” last month. (“I know where my eyes went — I’m not blood related to him, I was looking at that d—, bro,” Pratt had said.)

Schwarzenegger says that his family hasn’t set any rules for watching the NSFW scenes together — although with what he knows is coming up on the show, he says he might not be so keen to watch future episodes with them.

“There’s no rules,” he says. “But I probably will take a hiatus from watching with them for the next couple episodes.”

In Episode 1, Schwarzenegger’s character, Saxon, sleeps naked next to his younger brother, Lochlan (Sam Nivola), but Schwarzenegger says it wasn’t initially written into the script.

In fact, Schwarzenegger revealed on TODAY on March 13 that he suggested the idea to show creator Mike White.

“I was supposed to be in pajamas, but I thought it was very real for Saxon, for the character, to be naked,” he said. “It was a power play and it’s very much this character. Mike thought it was hilarious and it played into the next scene perfectly, and I think it caused a stir online.”

Schwarzenegger tells TODAY.com that he hopes people don’t conflate who he is as a person with his character, whom he describes as a “weird and creepy kind of guy.”

He says that after the nude scene in Episode 1 came out, someone asked him, “Dude, you really like that with your brother?”

Schwarzenegger, who has two sisters, a brother and a half-brother, replied, “No!”

“But, you also can’t control what everybody thinks,” he says.

Even still, Schwarzenegger says that for Saxon, a Southern finance bro, his most “pivotal (moments) are yet to come.”

Schwarzenegger was hesitant to give too much away about future episodes, but he hints that his character is forced to confront who he is throughout the rest of the season.

“One of the themes is kind of you enter the White Lotus as one person, and you leave as another,” he says. “Who are you when everything that you thought you were is taken away?”

“And I think that that’s something that’s really relevant and prevalent for Saxon, and of really dealing with him walking into he White Lotus as the most confident and sure person of who he is,” he continues. “And everything gets completely questioned in his experience there.”

Schwarzenegger is even keeping secrets of how the show pans out from his fiancée. But she tries to get him to spill by sharing fan theories from TikTok and Reddit and gauging his reaction, he says.

“She brings up the ones that she finds the most interesting and then she tells me them,” he says. “And she tries to get a reaction out of me, but I try to keep a pretty neutral tone.”

On TODAY, Schwarzenegger said that some of Champion’s favorite theories stem from the ones that believe that the Ratliffs are based off the real-life Peterson family, whose story was fictionalized in the HBO series “The Staircase.”

“I did another show with Parker Posey, actually, called ‘The Staircase,’ and our family in that show is also from Durham, North Carolina,” he said, noting the similarities to the Ratliff family on “The White Lotus.”

“There’s a lot of crossover, synergy there,” he added. “So Abby’s been very hooked on the theories of ‘The Staircase’ meeting ‘White Lotus.'”

Whether the Ratliffs meet a similar fate as the Petersons still remains to be seen. New episodes of “The White Lotus” air Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO and are also available to stream on Max.
