“Sweet Bobby,” a podcast and Netflix documentary of the same name, peers into the relationship between Kirat Assi and her cousin, Simran Bhogal.

For almost nine years, Assi thought she was speaking to a cardiologist named Bobby Jandu, someone she knew from their community of London Sikhs, over Facebook. Assi developed a deep connection to Jandu, eventually going from friends to an engaged couple. As his behavior grew more controlling, she confided in her younger cousin and their mutual connection, Bhogal.

Then, in 2018, Assi learned the truth: Her cousin said she had been posing as “Bobby” all along, along with about 50 other Facebook profiles, all of whom spoke to Assi within the context of this relationship.

The documentary “Sweet Bobby,” which came out three years after an investigative podcast of the same name, looks into what happened between the cousins. The real Bobby Jandu, along with Assi, are interviewed in the podcast and documentary. Bhogal is represented by an actor in the documentary.

What has Simran Bhogal said about the events depicted in ‘Sweet Bobby’?

Assi said Bhogal admitted to posing as Bobby in 2018. For both the Netflix documentary, which premiered on Oct. 16, and the podcast, Bhogal provided a statement but did not agree to an interview.

“This matter concerns a family dispute over events that began over a decade ago, when I was a schoolgirl. As far as I’m concerned, this is a private family matter that has been resolved. I strongly object to the numerous unfounded and seriously defamatory accusations that have been made about me, as well as details of private matters that have been shared with the media,” the statement reads.

As part of a civil lawsuit settlement, Bhogal wrote Assi an apology letter, which she said she could not share publicly according to the terms of the agreement.

Assi told Alexi Mostrous, host of the “Sweet Bobby” podcast, that Bhogal believed both of them were in a “dark place” and the catfishing scheme gave them “some kind of happiness and joy” through a “fantasy world.”

While Assi used to yearn to know Bhogal’s intentions with the catfishing scheme, now she tells TODAY.com she doesn’t “care about why anymore.”

“I don’t think I could ever believe anything that came out of her mouth anymore,” she says.

How do Assi and Bhogal know each other?

While Bhogal is Assi’s younger cousin, the family had another connection: The podcast reported that Bhogal’s dad served as the best man for Assi’s dad at his wedding.

Assi tells TODAY.com that they “weren’t a particularly close family” to hers, but that they would see each other at the Gurdwara, the Sikh temple, or at extended family events. The incident, she says, has been hard to move past in their “small” community, where everyone is “overly interconnected.”

“It just damages everything, and it must be hard for her family as well, like her immediate family, because it would impact everybody that lives in the house with you,” she says.

Bhogal has not been charged with a crime.

Assi filed a police report in 2018, but since there are no laws against catfishing in the U.K., the police closed the case. After the release of the “Sweet Bobby” podcast and an Independent Office for Police Conduct complaint Assi filed, the police re-opened Assi’s case, a decision her lawyer Yair Cohen told TODAY.com was “far overdue.”

Assi filed a civil suit against Bhogal in 2020 and they reached a settlement in 2021, Cohen confirmed to TODAY.com.

Bhogal paid Assi “substantial damages” and for her legal fees, Cohen said. She also provided a private apology letter. Bhogal also admitted liability, Cohen detailed in a write-up on his website.

Cohen says he is representing Jandu in a separate civil case against Bhogal, which he says is ongoing.

Speaking to TODAY.com, Assi says she wants more accountability from Bhogal.

“I just want her to take responsibility for her actions, and put her hands up and just say, ‘Look, I did this.’ Tell us how she did it, and allow herself to be held to account,” Assi says.

Where is Simran Bhogal now?

Details of Bhogal’s life emerged in the podcast. Assi described Bhogal as the “perfect daughter” in the podcast, noting that people were “always proud” of her.

Assi said Bhogal had always fit the “good little South Asian Punjabi Sikh girl” stereotype, adding that she had been head girl at school.

According to the podcast, she was engaged and worked for a large unnamed London bank. The podcast said she left her position in November 2021.

Bhogal does not appear to have an online presence.
