Stevie Nicks says she dealt with ex Lindsey Buckingham ‘for as long as I could’ in new interview
Stevie Nicks says she and her ex Lindsey Buckingham won’t be making music again anytime soon.
Nicks opened up to Rolling Stone about her tense reunion with Buckingham, which took place at a celebration of life for the pair’s former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie, who died in 2022 at age 79.
“The only time I’ve spoken to Lindsey was there, for about three minutes,” Nicks, 76, told the publication. “I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.”
One of pop music’s most tempestuous former couples, Nicks and Buckingham, 75, famously split up during recording of Fleetwood Mac’s landmark 1977 album “Rumours.” The result? Irresistibly catchy breakup songs — like “Dreams,” written by Nicks, and “Go Your Own Way,” written by Buckingham — that went on to become hits.
The exes continued on together in Fleetwood Mac with their dicey dynamic often creating drama, as evidenced by a viral TikTok video that shows Nicks glaring at Buckingham while performing the haunting “Silver Springs” at a 1997 concert.
“You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you,” Nicks sings, staring at Buckingham, before screaming, “You’ll never get away, never get away!”
The pair have also traded jabs in interviews with the media over the years.
After a final behind-the-scenes altercation with Buckingham at the 2018 MusicCares benefit concert in Fleetwood Mac’s honor, Buckingham was fired from the band, the Los Angeles Times previously reported.
Does Nicks regret not throwing in the towel sooner?
“No, I think that all just happened the way it should have. It happened one night, not planned, at a MusiCares. I didn’t even tell anybody it had happened in my head until the whole ceremony was over,” she told Rolling Stone. “I took with me that night a song that I had done with LeAnn Rimes called “Borrowed.” I took it with me to play for (Buckingham) because I thought we could do this song beautifully.
“That’s when he wasn’t very nice to anybody; he wasn’t very nice to Harry Styles,” she said, noting that Styles, with whom she’s sung a duet of the Fleetwood Mac hit “Landslide,” also performed at the concert.
“I could hear my mom saying, ‘Are you really going to spend the next 15 years of your life with this man?'” Nicks continued. “I could hear my very pragmatic father — and by the way, my mom and dad liked Lindsey a lot — saying, ‘It’s time for you guys to get a divorce.’ Between those two, I said, ‘I’m done.'”
TODAY.com has reached out to Buckingham for comment on Nicks’ Rolling Stone interview.
Nicks said she has no interest in reuniting with Buckingham for a farewell Fleetwood Mac tour.
“When Christine died, Fleetwood Mac died,” she explained. Though she did wish “the best” for her ex, who suffered a heart attack in 2019.
“I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people,” she said. “He’s also an icon, and he can teach people. He’s not stopped in his tracks. He can still make music and have fun.”
When Rolling Stone pointed out that Nicks had become a bigger musical icon than Buckingham, Nicks replied, “Well, that was one of the problems, wasn’t it?”
